CBD Oil Strength: mg per mL, Dropper Math & Chart

CBD oil strength in mg per mL = total CBD milligrams ÷ bottle volume in mL. To find the CBD in a measured amount, multiply that concentration by the milliliters you measure.
For example, 1200mg CBD in a 30mL bottle equals 40mg/mL. A measured 0.5mL contains 20mg CBD. These calculations explain a label; they do not tell you how much CBD you personally should take.
The three numbers to find on your CBD bottle
Total CBD: the labeled milligrams of CBD in the entire bottle.
Liquid volume: the bottle’s contents in milliliters.
Measured volume: the milliliters marked on your dropper or other suitable measuring device.
A large “hemp extract” or “total cannabinoids” number is not automatically the CBD amount. A blend can contain several cannabinoids with separate totals. Check the wording before doing the division.

This chart assumes the label states 30mL. A 1200mg bottle containing 60mL would instead have 20mg/mL—half the concentration of the same CBD amount in 30mL. Use the printed milliliter volume rather than assuming every bottle called “1oz” is identical.
How much CBD is in half a dropper?
“Half a dropper” is only useful when you know its marked volume. The amount drawn up by squeezing the bulb can vary. Check whether the device is marked at 0.25mL, 0.5mL, 0.75mL, or 1mL, and read those markings.
For an oil labeled 40mg CBD per mL:

Formula: mg/mL × measured mL = mg CBD. If you already have a specific milligram amount from your product directions or healthcare professional, the reverse calculation is mg ÷ mg/mL = mL. For example, 20mg ÷ 40mg/mL = 0.5mL. This is arithmetic, not a suggested serving.

A more concentrated oil puts the same CBD amount in less liquid. That does not establish that it is a better fit, works faster, or will give a better result. Always check the current package and batch report, particularly when replacing an older bottle with a different strength.
Strength, serving size, and bottle supply are different
Concentration describes each milliliter. Serving size describes the amount the manufacturer identifies as one serving. The number of servings describes how many of those amounts the bottle contains.
Using a hypothetical 30mL bottle, 30mL ÷ 0.5mL equals 60 measured portions. If a package instead defines a serving as 1mL, that same bottle contains 30 labeled servings. Neither calculation changes the bottle’s total CBD.

Check the lab report and cannabinoid profile
A certificate of analysis, or COA, should match the product and batch. Compare its CBD result with the labeled amount and check the units. A result in mg/g is not automatically the same as mg/mL; converting between mass and volume requires density information.
Read the CBD COA checklist for the full review. Full-spectrum, broad-spectrum, and isolate describe cannabinoid composition rather than concentration. Check THC separately; an oil’s CBD strength does not establish its THC content or a guaranteed drug-test result.
Common CBD oil strength questions
Does 1200mg mean 1200mg in every dropper?
Usually that number describes the whole bottle. Read the label to confirm, then divide by the bottle’s mL to calculate concentration.
How many milligrams are in one drop?
There is no universal answer. Drops vary with the device and liquid. Use a marked volume instead of assuming a fixed number of drops per mL.
Can I use the same dropper amount after switching strengths?
Recalculate first. The same 0.5mL contains 10mg in a 20mg/mL oil and 40mg in an 80mg/mL oil. Equal volumes can contain very different CBD amounts.
What if my dropper has no markings?
Ask the manufacturer or pharmacist for an appropriate graduated measuring device and instructions. Avoid guessing an amount from the bulb or bottle size.
